Clara, Badger Killer

The Awesome Dachshund

The name “dachshund” is of German origin and literally means “badger dog”, from Dachs (“badger”) and Hund (“dog”). Dachshunds have been kept by royal courts all over Europe, including that of Queen Victoria, who was particularly enamored of the breed.[47] They were originally bred for hunting badgers by trailing scent.

The first verifiable references to the dachshund, originally named the “Dachs Kriecher” (“badger crawler”) or “Dachs Krieger” (“badger warrior”), came from books written in the early 18th century.[48] Prior to that, there exist references to “badger dogs” and “hole dogs”, but these likely refer to purposes rather than to specific breeds. The original German dachshunds were larger than the modern full-size variety, weighing between 30 and 40 lb (14 and 18 kg), and originally came in straight-legged and crook-legged varieties (the modern dachshund is descended from the latter). Though the breed is famous for its use in exterminating badgers and badger-baiting, dachshunds were also commonly used for rabbit and fox hunting, for locating wounded deer, and in packs were known to hunt game as large as wild boar and as fierce as the wolverine.

There are huge differences of opinion as to when dachshunds were specifically bred for their purpose of badger hunting, as the American Kennel Club states the dachshund was bred in the 15th century, while the Dachshund Club of America states that foresters bred the dogs in the 18th or 19th century ~.wikipedia.org

I caught the Peonies!

Last year I missed them completely somehow. It doesn’t help that they are in the alley on the other side of my fence. I need to move them.

Maps And Things

Posted by Anita  Published in Musings

Map sourced from http://www.keiththompsonart.com/pages/grandmap.html

Do you have things that you are inexplicitly crazy for? Here’s mine;

  • Wooden furniture. That might be from growing up with absolute crap. I used cardboard boxes for shelves.
  • Paper. All kinds of paper, journals, pens and markers. Even though physical writing is excruciating for me and my penmanship is illegible.
  • Books, but that’s not inexplicable. That would make bookshelves to die for πŸ˜€
  • Globes and Maps. John is collecting maps for his future walk to Kaido. He wrote: “One traveler/photographer recommends getting hold of various local tourist maps, though even those don’t always capture more-recent road re-routing, landmark leveling, detours. Still, as tanaka1 points out, they are often fun and colorful.” You have no idea how cool those local maps are! I had quite a collection from all over the country but somewhere along the way I seem to have lost them all.

My youngest daughter has inherited all those likes from me. We drool over the bookshelves and she even got a globe of the moon finally!

Here’s some different kinds of map fun, compliments of google.

On a last note, Zemanta gave me lots of pictures of cardboard boxes to add to this post! lol

And…!! “Mapping the Average Penis Size Worldwide” Awesome. You’ll have to Google that for yourself, I’m not putting a link. πŸ˜€

Allergy vs Drug War

Posted by Anita  Published in Musings

I took Actifed for something like 30 years. A lot of actifed. I have allergies year-round. Then suddenly I couldn’t find it anymore in my state. When visiting NYC I bought several packages, but they didn’t seem to be working. Then I ordered several more from drugstore.com and they weren’t either! Wth? Same original packaging, nothing anywhere said they’d changed it. I only discovered that after lots of googling. So I bought Sudafed for a while. Then bam, that disappeared too. Along with a whole slew of others I tried that didn’t work anyway.

In my state now all the allergy meds are kept behind the pharmacy counter, they scan your driver’s license and make you sign for them, so obviously they can keep track of the quantity you are buying. So why pray tell can’t they sell ones with those nasty forbidden ingredients? Better to take the recommended dosage of a good one than overdosing myself with the worthless ones like I’ve been doing. Well, 1000’s of sneezes later I googled “original actifed” and discovered I could order it online from a Canadian pharmacy. They still limit quantities, they still require a copy of my driver’s license, but hey, I already do that for the worthless drugs so that’s not a problem! Last night for the first time in years I took an Actifed. What a blessed bloody relief!

With all that’s still on the news about meth labs being discovered I have to wonder how successful this stupid campaign has been. They seem to get their hands on the stuff they need just fine. Maybe I should go hook up with one and ask them what the trick is πŸ˜›

America is becoming ridiculous.
