Okay, my hard drive crashed and burned. I suppose I should be glad it wasn’t my boot drive but I’d have preferred that since this one had ALL my graphics programs, all my pictures, everything important to me on it. Gah, I had a warning when a couple times I got the “this drive is not formatted, would you like to format now?” message but it always straightened up. Then there was the error a few weeks ago that had literally thousands of file errors, most in my Bryce mats. I ran chkdsk and it fixed it and from what I could see, my Bryce suffered no ill effects. I had a premonition and actually copied my LVS pdfs elsewhere and was working on doing the same with the rest. So, looks like I might not be getting at my Illustrator class too quick.
I think it would be worth it to me to pay for data recovery. I read that putting it in the freezer might make it work but I don’t think mine is a mechanical failure. There were no strange noises or any clue that something was seriously wrong (yeah, yeah, like the errors I’ve been having weren’t a clue :p). I am seriously not happy.
Hi Anita. Sorry for your troubles. Sheesh; I don’t know how such a nice person can have so many problems. ‘Come on Mother Karma, Wake Up! I hope you can get it up and running again with data recovery.
Yeah sometimes life should just cut you some slack huh? Ah well, I feel all lousy inside but I’m choosing to ignore it.
I wish I could return the favor of this afternoon and write a sentence after each one of yours that would answer all your questions. Unfortunately, as you are well aware from this afternoon, I cannot save anyone from computer problems. I myself keep an address file of computer tech people, but I guess you would be on such a list! I’m very sympathetic, and hope you get it working again without too much trouble. Karol
Hi Karol, I hope I answered a few of them at least! I must say this made for a disgruntled me today. Thanks for the good wishes, I’ll survive.
Its a curse on the LVS blogging staff! I lost not one but TWO hard drives in December. Unfortunately, my hard drive diagnostic days are long over. I have put the word out to my hardware geeks in hopes of some marvelous and miraculous ideas.
Data recovery isn’t cheap, I am saving up to try to do data recovery of my backup external hard drive that smokes when plugged in π

Hi there. A little beanz sent up some help flares to see if there was anything I might be able to help with.
Is the drive still connected to your machine? Does windows recognize it at all? Does it ‘click’ at all when you turn your machine on? When you boot up and your bios flicks passed, does the drive show up there?
Without being able to try troubleshooting with the drive in hand, I might only be able to offer minor assistance at best. If you do decide to get data recovery, be sure to check with the hard drive vendor first (if it’s a Maxtor drive, check them out, same goes for seagate, etc).
Remember, though you might not have heard bad clicking or grinding noises, it’s still possible that it’s a mechanical problem, IE, it’s possible the head crashed, or just plain motor failure.
I hope you can get the data back at some point. I know how bad disk failure can bite.
Thank you Bean and Jeramie! I sent you an email. I was depressed, I can’t imagine losing two of them in one month Bean! After pricing data recovery I think I’d have been saving a long time for it.
We might need to mention this is a risk of blogging too much! lol
I’m starting to run into stuff that won’t transfer, either it’s lost stuff or the drive is going wonky again.
Oh Sliloh, that must be so frustrating!! I’m sorry for all the computer problems you’re having. I hope you can retrieve your graphics files.
Anita that’s #@#*!! TERRIBLE! I hate it when I have computer issues. Life is frazzled enough. Is there a computer god we can pray to? I wish….

Hi Anita-
So sorry to hear about your woes. I think we caught it from Bean! Now my computer is acting up, too! Been freezing periodically, but today it happened twice. Once I had a blank screen!! EEK! Fortunately, I was able to reboot and frantically do a bunch of disk utility stuff and make a new bootable clone. I’m holding my breath.
Hang in there!
Cheryl (other TA)
Thanks everyone. After several reboots I did get it to see the drive and managed to retrieve very little, file by file. Whenever I got to a damaged area it slowed things to a crawl and every time I tried copying a few at a time it would hit a damaged one and croak the whole process. Very frustrating.
Ack, well that just really bites. Sorry to read of your disk failure, been there, done that…lost half a year of fractal images. I’m glad you got to rescue a few things.
Hm…i bet it’s time to back up everything i can think of…
Best of luck with getting as much as possible back!

Ahhh — nightmares! All I can offer you is a box of tissues for your tears. No geek am I. But I’ll commiserate with you… and hope you can repeat the steps from two comments up until you get all your stuff back.
I didn’t know about Bean’s loss in December either. I guess there’s no truly safe way to save, is there? Double saving isn’t even fool-proof — but it’s a start.
I’m sorry, girls… π

Oh Pete, that sucks! I guess I should feel glad I hadn’t done much art lately. π I lost a lot of mine once but that was years ago and my art wasn’t that good then..iow, no great loss!
I was pretty bummed, some of it I still had on my old computer but I lost much. I ordered two new hard drives which will hopefully be here tomorrow. I decided if there was any drive I needed it backup for it’s my packrat one where I keep everything.
The big pain now is being lost without my photoshop, so I reinstalled it on my old computer and I’m working code on this one and images on that one and having to drag them over. What a nuisance.
